What is H-IQ?

H-IQ (Hunter Imagination Questionnaire) is an online instrument to improve your imagination by helping you generate and implement ideas and purpose for your life.

H-IQ engages you in metacognition—thinking about how you think across a spectrum of ten categories. For example, are you more of a verbal or visual thinker? Does you prefer a linear style, or do you prefer following random thoughts?

Assessing Your Imagination

H-IQ presents assessments with speedometer-like graphs showing how you fit between two thinking styles.

Like a speedometer, the needle varies with each problem. You may be a predominately verbal thinker, but there will be times when you draw on visualization.

The following are the spectrums analyzed by H-IQ:

  1. How engaged/passionate are you about the idea?
  2. Are you more of a visual or verbal thinker?
  3. Is your thinking methodical/linear or more random/freewheeling?
  4. How fresh is this ideas: recent vs. long-term?
  5. How difficult is it to generate ideas?
  6. Does the idea fulfill a short term or long-term goal?
  7. Do you prefer collaborative or solo thinking?
  8. Are your ideas inner or externally directed?
  9. Flexibility: do you draw information from a variety or diverse sources?
  10. Broad perception: do you focus your ideation in more than one domain?

Imagination

Imagination is a fundamental to all humans.  It is the

  • ability to predict outcomes,
  • engage in counterfactual thinking, and
  • visualize scenarios.

All ideas begin in imagination, and imagination is the source of creativity.

We use our imaginations every day, to make simple decisions:

  • what would be good for lunch (predicting outcomes)
  • what if I owned my own car (counterfactual thinking)
  • I bet the cafeteria is crowded now (visualize scenarios)

Imagination is how you guide your life—but it’s also the source of our most profound thinking.

Imagination Leads to Creativity

Imagination and creativity are not the same.

Imagination is the ability to predict outcomes, visualize scenarios, and engage in counterfactual thinking—for daily issues as well as profound issues like the meaning of life.  It is the source of all ideas—good, bad or indifferent.

Creativity is something new, original, and useful. Creativity is an external designation provided by others. Imagination is what happens inside your brain.

is when you’re in the on-deck circle concocting your batting strategy—you might decide to lay down a bunt, or swing for the fences. But you could be thinking about anything—chicken pot pie, Cadillac car. Imagination is internal and private. But ideally, you’re imagining what you will do at the plate.

is when you come to the plate to see if your idea will work in front of the world. The world, like baseball, has certain expectations for success. In baseball, there are two arbitrary, white lines—the foul lines. If your hit goes outside of the foul lines, it doesn’t count. It’s true with any idea: if the idea has no value to others, it is rejected or ignored.
is when the batter reaches first base. The implementation of your idea delivers success within the expectations of the game.

Corporations and Business

H-IQ cultivates an innovative workforce by creating a means for generating and revising individual ideas. “Brainstorming” often leads to group think when one or two voices dominate, preventing all colleagues from contributing. H-IQ allows everyone to generate ideas. Individual H-IQ sessions expedite brainstorming by giving uninterrupted, quiet time to think.

Educators

Students need strong imaginations to solve problems and generate ideas. H-IQ improves student imaginations through the practice of generating, revising, and implementing ideas.

Individuals

H-IQ establishes how well you imagination is advancing your goals and dreams. H-IQ engages you in metacognition so that you can understand your thinking process. H-IQ helps improve student mental health by helping to find purpose in life at any age.

Teaching for Creativity

Students develop better imagination by exploring their own ideas through H-IQ.  But teachers, parents, and peers must provide encouragement.

Here are four broad steps that can guide you:

  • Attitude—Pay attention and respect ideas
  • Curiosity—develop and maintain a passionate curiosity.
  • Practice—the more you exercise your imagination, the more agile, flexible, and productive it will become

Direction—Allow time for random imagination like daydreaming, but make sure that your imagination also focuses on your goals.
